Flights of Wonder

Flights of Wonder is a scheduled 25-minute live show presented several times a day in the Asia area of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park. The show features the fascinating natural behaviors and often humorous talents of at least 20 species of exotic birds, including Harris hawks, macaws and a Yellow-napped Amazon parrot named Groucho, who has an amazing singing voice.

Step inside the shaded, canvas-canopied area and take a seat in front of the ornately-decorated Caravan Stage. This is where local tour guide "Guano" Joe and his partner Luke, a bird handler in training, pair up for the Flights of Wonder performance.

In response to "Guano" Joe and Luke's cues, the birds hunt, sing, soar and sometimes swoop just above your head for some high-flying surprises.

Though the cast changes on occasion, the Flights of Wonder show may include birds from these species:

SHOW ENDING: Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends will have its last show September 27, 2008. No word on a replacement show. Pocahontas will continue to appear in character meet and greets in the main entrance of Animal Kingdom and at Rafiki's Planet Watch.

INTRODUCTION
Is there really one animal that can save America's forests and the animals who live there from destruction? Native American legend says there is. But which one? Grandmother Willow says, "You must ask the animals." And Pocahontas sets out to do just that.

ATTRACTION

This is the story of "Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends," where live forest animals take the stage in a nature grove to demonstrate how they can help. Based on characters from the Walt Disney film, Pocahontas, the stage show, makes use of music from the film as background for the intimate stage show.

There's a prickly porcupine, a possum, a raccoon, a rabbit, wild turkey and an energetic skunk. There's even a very large snake, another of the friends Pocahontas brings on stage to help younger audience members learn more about their animal neighbors. In the end, Grandmother Willow and Pocahontas and all her friends learn that the only animals who can save the forests are -- you guessed it -- humans.

The 12-minute show is presented up daily in the tree-shaded 400-seat Grandmother Willow's Grove.

TOURING TIPS

The first 3 rows are reserved for children...so be sure yours gets an up close seat!

If your little one (or not so little one!) loves animals -- that is, if they'd rather stand and watch the anteater than rush off to the TriceraTop Spin -- be sure to catch the Pocahontas and Her Forest Friends Animal Training Show. They demonstrate how they train the animals for the show, and since the animals are still learning, sometimes things don't go perfectly. If you have time later, go to one of the other performances of this show, and you'll appreciate it more, knowing the work that goes into putting this show on. The theatre is bench seating with no backs in the outdoors.

Dino-Sue

Dino-Sue is a replica of a real Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton, on display in the DinoLand U.S.A. area in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Pose for pictures with the 13-foot tall, 40-foot long reproduction of the largest, most complete T-Rex ever found. Clocking in at 67 million years, Dino-Sue is the length of a 4-story building.

The History of Sue the Dinosaur

Sue the dinosaur is named after fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson, who discovered the 67 million-year-old skeletal remains of a Tyrannosaurus Rex in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1990. It is one of the most famous fossil finds of the century.

With more than 90 percent of Dinosaur Sue's bones accounted for, the find brought forth a tremendous amount of information to what little is known about the species.

Check out our accurate replica of Dino-Sue on display at the Dino Institute near the entrance to the DINOSAUR attraction. To see the real Sue the dinosaur, visit The Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois where the actual skeleton is permanently on display.

Kilimanjaro Safaris®

Kilimanjaro Safaris, an attraction for Guests of all ages, provides the chance to see African animals including giraffes, black rhinos and lions, as they roam the 100-acre savannah in the Africa area of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

The Kilimanjaro Safaris tour begins in the Harambe Wildlife Reserve, across the river from Discovery Island. Climb aboard a rugged open-sided safari vehicle for an exciting expedition through the wildlife preserve. The ride can be a bit bumpy as it crosses rickety bridges, rocky hills and rivers—but you're rewarded with spectacular animal sightings.

Since animals have minds of their own, no two Kilimanjaro Safari experiences are the same. You may even catch a glimpse of one of the many baby animals that were recently born at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Ride the rails aboard this rustic African train for a behind-the-scenes journey through several animal housing and care areas of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park. Travel the savannah and see where rhinos, elephants and other animals spend the night and obtain the care they need.

The Wildlife Express Train is the only way to get to Rafiki's Planet Watch, an area dedicated to the preservation and conservation of animals. Here you can get an up-close look at the inner workings of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park and take part in fun-filled, educational activities that help create awareness of animal issues.

Exotic Animal Encounters at Maharajah Jungle Trek

One of the highlights of this tour is the Asian tigers. There are 3 separate viewing areas where you can watch these majestic animals play, sometimes frolicking in the water with a large ball.

A Komodo Dragon, the world's largest lizard, resides near a waterfall at the beginning of the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Continue on and you'll encounter the Malayan Tapir—a unique, half black, half white mammal that inhabits forested regions of Asia. Stop at the Bat Cliffs to observe the Rodrigues Fruit and Malayan Flying Fox bat species.

Expedition Everest in the Asia area of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park is a high-altitude, high-speed, roller coaster train ride for big kids, teens and adults to the "Roof of the World," home of the inhospitable snarling beast, the Yeti, at the mountain's peak.

Climb aboard a railway car for a full-steam-ahead adventure bound for Mount Everest. Your trek across the treacherous terrain of the towering Forbidden Mountain begins with a few scenic twists and turns, then sets out on an ascent towards the summit.

From this panoramic point with amazing views across Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park, you plunge into darkness. Returning to the light, you see that the tracks have been twisted into a dead end. As the wind howls, you realize there's no place to go on this expedition—or is there?

Careening into the darkness, you might get a glimpse of the denizen of this icy domain. Nail-biting hairpin turns hurl you forward and down sudden drops on the mountain slopes in a race to escape.

But beware. There, up ahead… waiting for you… lurks the Yeti.

Pangani Forest Exploration Trail is a self-guided walking tour of native African wildlife in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Pangani means "place of enchantment," and this exploration trail is an enchanting adventure into a lush, tropical forest and a verdant valley that are right out of the heart of Africa. Take a leisurely walk in search of rare African animals such as gorillas, hippos, okapi, naked mole rats, meerkats and many species of exotic birds.

Exotic Animal Encounters at Pangani Forest Exploration Trail

The first observation post on the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail provides the opportunity to observe Stanley Cranes; Okapi, the only known living relative of the giraffe; and Yellow-backed Duikers, a member of the antelope family.

Next, enter a hut where you can watch a fascinating colony of naked mole rats in their underground burrows from a glass observation area.

Continue into an aviary filled with many species of rare African birds such as Carmine Bee-eaters, Red-bearded Barbets and Brimstone Canaries. Some birds fly freely about, while others are ground-dwelling and roam freely on the floor of the aviary.

As you amble along the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail, don't miss the hippos! See these colossal beasts move through the water with effortless grace at an underwater glass viewing area.

Another popular animal to observe is the Meerkat. Check out the Meerkats' antics as you overlook an African grassland savannah that is also home to several types of grazing animals such as Gunther's dik-diks, Thomson's gazelles and Gerenuk.

One of the major highlights of the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail comes towards the end of the trail: an encounter with a troop of Lowland gorillas. Did you know the Lowland gorillas are vegetarians, non-violent and that 98% of their DNA is identical to human DNA?

View these magnificent creatures up close from one of several viewing areas that overlook the multiple habitats for these endangered species. Be on the lookout for the massive silverback males and their families. As your visit to the Pangani Forest Exploration Trail draws to a close, you will indeed have experienced a wondrous "place of enchantment."

It's Tough to be a Bug! is an an 8-minute, 3D movie and multimedia show, fun for big kids, teens and adults, performed in an air-conditioned movie theater embedded in the enormous root structure of The Tree of Life in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

It's Tough to be a Bug! is hosted by Flik, everybody's favorite ant, and his grasshopper friend, Hopper, from the Disney·Pixar film A Bug's Life. The supporting cast consists of cute and creepy crawlers like spiders, termites, beetles, weevils and butterflies.

These amazing and amusing insects and arachnids invite the audience to be honorary bugs. Through 3D "Bug-Eye" glasses, get a fascinating and hilarious look into the animal kingdom that just might change your perspective enough to think: "It's Tough to be a Bug! Insects should be our friends."

But Hopper reveals humans as bugs' biggest enemy, and suddenly it's a swarm of activity. Hornets go in for the sting and everyone's a-buzz, reacting to the startling, surprising (and possibly frightening for little grubs, er, little ones) in-theater special effects. Finally, Flik cues the finale and the show metamorphoses into its sweet spectacular finish. Gotta take it from an ant: from coccon to curtain call, It's Tough to be a Bug!

Climb into a 4-person dino vehicle and soar around a giant top as cartoon comets fly past and friendly dinosaurs pop up. Little ones just might want to do the driving and make their flying dinosaur go higher or lower while flying in a circle.

Don't be surprised if something dino-sized rises from the giant top in the middle!

TriceraTop Spin is part of the zany antics of Chester and Hester's Dino-Rama, a special area within the DinoLand U.S.A. area full of family-friendly games and attractions.

DINOSAUR is a thrilling adventure at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park aboard a time rover that transports Guests to the age of dinosaurs on a daring quest to bring back a living piece of history.

A routine visit to The Dino Institute museum is interrupted by a mischievous scientist with a secret mission. The scientist recruits you to travel back to the Cretaceous era, 65 million years ago, to capture a mild-mannered Iguanodon and return to the present day with the 3.5-ton dinosaur in tow.

Once you climb aboard an experimental CTX Time Rover, you'll want to buckle up. Time travel can be one turbulent trip!

Your rover arrives in a dark prehistoric forest that's almost pitch black, but you can sense large creatures are moving all around you. Some are gentle giants; others are monstrous meat-eating predators in search of a tasty snack. Suddenly a enormous animal appears—and it is not one of the friendly variety.

The Iguanodon is nowhere to be found and you're lost in a thick jungle with hungry dinosaurs, but that's not the worst of it: the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs is about to strike. You've got to find your target and get out of the past before you become history.

The countdown begins: 60 seconds before the meteor pulverizes the Earth! You hear the terrifying roar of an unimaginably huge beast. Is it the friendly Iguanodon or the carnivorous Carnotaurus? Get ready for a bumpy ride filled with thrills and close calls!

The clock is ticking. Will you escape or become extinct?

The Oasis Exhibits

The Oasis Exhibits inside the entrance to Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park are lush, tropical garden pathways filled with wildlife such as wallabies, deer and exotic birds. These garden paths lead to Safari Village, the center of the Theme Park.

With shady trails, a variety of flora and fauna, waterfalls and meandering streams, and early morning mist that covers the ground, the Oasis Exhibits are more than just an entryway into the Theme Park—they are a tropical retreat that sets the atmosphere for the Theme Park experience.

This locale is the only place in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park where you can experience a hands-on encounter with a variety of live, friendly, domesticated animals. The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life, a sculpted 14-story (145-foot tall), 50-foot wide tree, is the centerpiece and icon in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Paths known as Discovery Island Trails weave around and through this homage to nature. Stroll the trails to see a swirling tapestry of 325 animals carved into the bark of this massive attraction. Look for creatures like Galapagos tortoises, lemurs and cotton-top tarmarins.

A theater is housed in the Tree of Life root system where the It's Tough to be a Bug! show is performed. This 8-minute, 3D movie and multimedia show features Flik, everybody's favorite ant, and his grasshopper friend, Hopper, from the Disney·Pixar film A Bug's Life—along with a supporting cast of insects and arachnids who provide a suprising look into the animal kingdom.

Conservation Station gives Guests of all ages a fun and educational behind-the-scenes look at the animals of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

The exhibits are in an air-conditioned station where you can meet some of the animal handlers, see some animals and learn about the veterinary care, research and food preparation that are part of the day-to-day activities in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Habitat Habit! is a fun and educational wildlife trail located in Rafiki's Planet Watch area in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Amble along this informative adventure trail and enjoy the antics of one of the most endangered primates in the world—the tiny primates known as cotton-top tamarins. These entertaining South American monkeys are named for the long, flowing white hair that fans from their head.

This trail is a wonderful educational experience, especially for big kids, that shows how everyone can help with animal conservation efforts in ways you may have never thought possible.

Kids Discovery Clubs are fun-filled activity stations for kids of all ages located throughout Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

There are 6 Kids Discovery Club outposts where kids can explore and discover nature's wonders through hands-on experiences such as constructing a dinosaur from a pile of bones, going on a scavenger hunt, becoming a wildlife detective and viewing the world from a bug's point of view.

After completing each activity, kids receive a stamp. Once they collect all 6 stamps, they can receive a special bonus for completing all the activities.

Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade

Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade features popular Disney Characters as they pay tribute to the wild spirit of their animal friends in a 15-minute, high-energy, afternoon procession that loops through the various areas—Africa, Discovery Island, Asia, and back to Africa—of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Rafiki, the mandrill from Disney's animated film, The Lion King, leads Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade in a brightly painted Adventure Rover. Following behind him are Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy in customized Jeeps that are cleverly decorated to match each Character's personality.

The streets in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park come alive during Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade with music and more colorfully-costumed performers, including:

Primeval Whirl is a spinning, mild but wild roller coaster-type ride in the DinoLand U.S.A. area in Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Big kids, teens and adults can take a whirl in a spinning "time machine" car for dinosaur-themed excitement and thrills. In addition to sudden dips, hairpin turns and tight curves, this coaster spins each car on its own round and round path. You never know which way your car will twirl as you race around, making this ride a new experience each time.

Kali River Rapids

Kali River Rapids is an adventurous river raft ride for big kids, teens and adults that journeys through the rainforest on the churning Chakranadi River in the Asia area of Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park.

Climb aboard a circular, 12-passenger raft and begin a 90-foot ascent past picturesque, lush jungle and jasmine-scented mists. Then drop into gushing geysers and drift under refreshing waterfalls.

The Kali River Rapids raft covers some choppy waters, and then there's a startling change in scenery. Hazardous debris left behind by illegal loggers litter the riverbanks. A few infernos blaze through the landscape. Scattered across your path: evidence that renegade logging companies are threatening wildlife and destroying delicate rainforests.

Escape the devastation by rushing down a 30-foot waterfall. As your raft floats under the bridge, beware the smiling faces that look down from above—you may get a soppy surprise. There are signs before boarding Kali River Rapids warning that you will get wet. You will. Maybe even soaked. Such a pleasant respite on a hot day.
